Help Bring Elliott to DC!

July 24, 2010

Please help us bring Elliott to DC! Elliott is a beautiful 1 year old husky/lab mix currently in a rural high kill shelter in Ohio. He was picked up by animal control wandering around the downtown of his little town. The shelter has fallen in love with this sweet, loving boy and has asked us for help. Please donate today (or apply to foster) Elliot!

Bring Jake to DC!

June 7, 2010

Meet Jake! Jake is currently stuck in West Virginia, patiently waiting to come to the DC area where he can start his new life!

Jake was rescued by a West Virginia organization just before the county dog warden's appointment to have him euthanized. There were 16 dogs and unfortunately they could only rescue 13 of them. Jake was lucky number 13! Help keep Jake's lucky streak alive and consider donating so we can bring him here to a foster home.

Spot the Beagle - His Bad Lungs!

May 21, 2010

Spot is a suuuuuuper sweet boy who needs some sponsorship and a loving home of his own! Spot was rescued from a hoarder where he was kept outside in a cage with no heat, no walks,  no heartworm preventative and no medical care. He came to us with a massive ear infection, badly decayed and infected teeth and a cough that several vets have taken time to diagnose!

Spot has now seen two vets and a cardiologist...and it turns out he has chronically inflamed lungs that need medical care. We must raise $1,000 for his lung scope so that we can properly get him treated.

But beyond a cough, you would not know that sweet Spot was not perfect! He wags his tail, sniffs every corner of the dog park and looooves to cuddle in his soft bed. He is good with dogs, cats and people. He is just truly happy to be out of the elements and in a foster home where he gets lots of love.

Please consider adopting Spot and/or making a donation so we can get his lungs looked at. The docs seem to think he'll keep kicking for many more years...but we need to get his lungs on the road to healing. Help us!!

Jasper Needs His Hip Fixed!

April 23, 2010

Just look at Jasper's sweet face!  This photo was taken while Jasper was still in a rural shelter in WV.  With only a few days left to live, Homeward Trails scooped Jasper out and brought him to a foster home in the DC area.  Jasper's foster mom just adores him and noticed his limp as soon as he arrived.  It turns out that Jasper has some very old leg injuries, probably sustained from being struck by a car!  This poor boy has been in pain for quite some time!

The vet says that during his accident, Jasper's hip was dislocated and the knee on his other leg was fractured.  The knee has healed okay, but Jasper needs surgery to set his hip back in place so we can relieve his pain!  Jasper will never be a running partner, but he will live a long, healthy and comfortable life - can you help us to get Jasper the surgery he needs?

Cheyanne Lost Her Toes!

April 23, 2010

Cheyanne has had it pretty rough!  You'll have to read the description on her petfinder page for her full story - but sufice to say that this sweet, gentle giant has gone through quite an ordeal!  She is now living very happily with a foster family in the DC area and loves everyone.  Cheyanna sustained a leg injury quite some time ago and has had to have her toes amputated and an infection treated.  She may still need to have her whole leg amputated!  Please make a donation today to help Homeward Trails provide the medical care that Cheyanne needs! Use the Sponsor Donation section of this page: http://homewardtrails.org/help-out/donate-money

Help Save Cindy

April 6, 2010

Sweet baby Cindy needs your help to survive! Cindy has parvovirus, a dangerous and sometimes deadly illness in puppies - but you can help! She needs medical attention that is quite expensive, so please donate, if only a few dollars, to help fund her medical care. Cindy even has a prospective home - and we so want her to make it there. Just click on "chip in," below to make a tax deductible donation today.

Cindy is currently at the vet's office, undergoing IV antibiotic and fluid treatments.  She is feeling somewhat better this morning, but needs to continue these treatments to survive.  Cindy came to Homeward Trails from Ritchie County Humane Society, the shelter that burned to the ground just a couple short months ago. One day, she just showed up in someone's yard. She got along great with their kids and their other dogs, but since they already had a number of dogs they really couldn't keep her. That's how Cindy found herself in the Ritchie County shelter.  We were able to scoop her out and bring her to a foster home here in the DC area.  She is a sweet pup who loves to play and cuddle and is good with everyone! She likes cats, all dogs and puppies big and little, and all people, from 3 to 93!

Cindy is only about 3 months old, but she's already gotten lost, wandered into a stranger's yard, been taken to a shelter in WV, and travelled to a new foster hom in the DC area - that's a lot for one little puppy!  We so want to help Cindy know what it's like to have a permanent, loving home.  We will keep posting on this blog with updates about Cindy's progress.  Help us to make her better!

Stripes Needs Surgery

March 26, 2010

Stripes came from a shelter with an old injury to his leg. He wasn't putting any weight on it, but he could hop up and down the shelves just fine. The X-rays showed he has significant damage in his elbow joint from an infected wound. The bones can no longer support his weight and the only option is amputation. We need to raise over $1,800 for the surgery so he can be free of pain and resume a happy life. Please consider chipping in for his medical costs by contributing through pay pal.

He has already learned how to get around on three legs, so we expect a relatively easy recuperation before he can be adopted. Stripes is a young and very sweet cat. He will be the star of someone's family.

More Belly Rubs!

March 5, 2010

What a difference a few weeks -- and lots of love -- can make! Amazingly, Jacob was sweet even before anyone showed him love. Now we're happy to share that the sweet boy is basking in the attention of his foster--and napping long and hard in the doggie bed donated for his use. His foster mom says that whenever she crouches down to try to take his picture, he climbs into her lap and lies on his back for a tummy rub.

Here's a video of Jacob playing at Dog Paws doggie day care in Arlington. His foster mom reports: "Sounds like he had a great time there without me! And he's a hit with the ladies - a few girl dogs were following him around quite a bit! (He is quite handsome...)"

Can you help sweet Jacob?

February 16, 2010

Jacob was found in a man's barn, eating grain and taking shelter from the bitter winter cold. The man called the Wetzel County, WV shelter and the shelter, knew just who to call to get Jacob the care and love he needed: Homeward Trails.

Even before HT had secured a foster for Jacob (we always need fosters!), HT said yes, we will help.

Jacob is underweight and has lots of wounds, old and new, including an infection that has spread to a joint on the left front leg, causing him obvious pain. Yet despite the terrible times Jacob has been subjected to, he is, amazingly, friendly, mellow and sweet. He wowed everyone at the vet's office--staff, other dogs, and (initially wary) pet owners alike. The vet took an x-ray of that swollen leg and found it wasn't broken--hurray! But his care will continue to cost money (including antibiotics and continued assessment), so we're raising funds for Jacob. Click the link below to contribute to Jacob's care:

Jacob is now in foster care and resting comfortably. A kind HT supporter donated the bed and blanket--and, as you can see, he loves them. His foster promises she'll take more pics, but she says it's been tough since when he's awake, Jacob is generally snuggling in her lap. At first, when she had to leave the room, she reports, Jacob limped after her. Once he realized she was always going to come back, he settled into bed (or, even better, her lap).

We'll keep you updated on Jacob's progress.

Bold Zeus, King of the Dogs

February 4, 2010

Bouncy, bold and busy; pomeraninan Zeus is a whole lot of adorable packed into a 6 pound body! Tiny 2 year old Zeus is a fanastic apartment companion. Zeus needs special care before he can be placed in his forever home. A mass on this little guy's head requires some special tests to identify and treat this wound. Can you help Zeus heal today? He'll be on his way ruling your heart in no time.

Found as a stray, Zeus's past is unknown, but this bubbly guy is happy to be in foster care in Washingotn, DC. Zeus gets along great with the other dogs and cats in his foster home. He loves his daily walks and adventures, and is also happy exploring the back yard. He is a total cuddle bug who loves to snuggle on the couch or in bed. He adores being picked up and held. This little guy is playful, confident and attentive. He is doing well at potty training and crate training. Zeus is a confident little man who thinks he is a much bigger dog than he is, and does like to let other dogs know he's coming by barking on his walk. He will need a family willing to help him understand his role in the world. Please consider sponsoring, or adopting, Zeus today!
