HT Danville

Danville, Virginia

Homeward Trails (HT) is proud to operate several lifesaving programs in Danville, Virginia, one of the state’s highest euthanizing communities.

With an average euthanasia rate of 85% at the Danville Area Humane Society (DAHS), these programs and resources provide critical lifesaving for the thousands of deserving animals who would otherwise face needless euthanasia. Together, with your support, we’re saving more cats and dogs—one life at a time.

Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return

Starting in 2024, HT began providing free Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) programs for cat caregivers and owners in Danville, VA. To date, this vital program has served more than 1,000 cats — preventing the birth of thousands of unwanted kittens while delivering vital care, including vaccinations, microchipping, medical treatment, food, and shelter. These efforts are not only improving the lives of cats and their caregivers, but are also reducing the number of cats entering and being euthanized at DAHS. These services are free to Danville City residents. If you are in need of TNVR services, click the button below.

Foster and Diversion

Foster and diversion programs are designed to help animals remain in a home environment. To facilitate such, we provide support including food, supplies, shelter, and medical care to keep animals safe until they can be placed into a foster home, adopted, or transferred to receiving partner rescues and shelters.

By preventing animals from being surrendered to DAHS through these programs, we directly decrease the risk of illness and euthanasia. We rely on a dedicated network of volunteers and local partners who provide short-term, temporary care and support to animals in need—offering them a critical bridge to a better future. Every animal entering a foster home means a life saved.

Our 20+ year track record of running successful foster and adoption programs will give Danville residents the resources and support needed to play an important role in ensuring that all animals in Danville receive the best opportunity for adoption.

Home to A Home

Homeward Trails’ Home To a Home program provides support, resources and placement for animals needing rehoming, keeping them out of the shelter and allowing them to go directly from one loving home to another.

Neonatal Kittens

Neonatal kittens—those still needing bottle feeding—require round-the-clock care to survive. Through our partnership with the National Kitten College National Kitten College – Home Page, Homeward Trails Danville offers a dedicated team of specially trained volunteers who provide this critical, hands-on support.

Using the most advanced, lifesaving protocols, our team gives these vulnerable kittens the best possible chance at a healthy life.

Transfer and Transport

HT works with dozens of progressive and successful shelters and rescues around Virginia and beyond who ensure that animals are given every possible resource and opportunity for successful adoption. As DAHS currently allows for few animals to be adopted in the Danville area, transferring them to other jurisdictions is lifesaving.

Thousands of animals enjoy lifesaving outcomes in Virginia every year through successful transport and transfer programs. Collaboration saves lives!

Food and Supplies

We know firsthand that loving pet owners can sometimes fall on hard times and need food and supplies to keep their pets safe, healthy and remaining in their homes. HT operates an ongoing pet pantry to provide both to families in need.

Adoption

The Danville area is home to many compassionate, animal-loving residents eager to open their homes to pets in need. Unfortunately, few have had the opportunity to adopt directly from DAHS.

Homeward Trails is changing that.

By working closely with the local community, we’re making more animals available for adoption and empowering residents to be part of the solution to animal homelessness. With over 20 years of experience running successful foster and adoption programs, we provide the tools, resources, and support Danville adopters need to succeed.

We’re proud to say: We LOVE local adopters—and we’re here to help you find your perfect match.

  • Helping Happy Hounds – Fee Waived Hound Adoptions

As you may or may not know, Virginia animal shelters are filled with Hounds. These amazing dogs are most often discarded by callous hunters, found starving wandering the countryside. Many never make it as hunters and are then tied up to chains or left along the side of the road like old furniture. A good number of them do not make it out of shelters alive. But these dogs – like all dogs – are amazing and worthy of families. We just cannot get them families fast enough to stop them from dying in our shelters when there is no more space. And so we are trying something new here. ALL HOUND DOGS AGE 1 AND OLDER ADOPTED FROM HOMEWARD TRAILS WILL BE FREE. Yes, we are WAIVING ADOPTION FEES for Hounds over the age of 1 year for the foreseeable future. We hope that will entice well-matched applicants to consider a Hound now. Use the money you save on training, treats, toys.We think all dogs are worthy. But the reality is that some take extra incentives. Some have more barriers to getting adopted. And the result is well, more end up dying. And no – this does NOT mean we are just giving dogs away. All applicants will still go through our application/screening process to ensure good homes. This is just us trying to save more dogs by eliminating one more barrier to adoption. And hey, Hound lovers can use all the extra money they can get to buy treats, right?Help us help these Hounds. Our program Helping Happy Hounds is live NOW. Let’s save some lives!
