DC SCORES team members at Bancroft Elementary School hosted HT rep Leslie Shedd on April 29th in order to learn more about the plight of homeless animals and ways to help.

The students chose to help homeless animals and invited an HT representative, Leslie Shedd, to meet with them and tell them more about why the animals need our help and what we can do. Among other things, the students learned “We can help by raising money or get donations, talk to your friends and family about the importance or spaying or neutering so they can’t have babies so that less animals are put to sleep every six seconds, talk to your friends and family about taking their dogs to the vets to get check ups… etc.”

Paw-Casso-Logo-Final-2013-smallSponsored by Urban Pace

We are thrilled to announce that PawCasso 2013 raised $25,000 for the Homeward Trails Medical Fund. This fund allows Homeward Trails Animal Rescue to take in animals with correctable, but often expensive medical needs.

Two hundred art and animal lovers joined the festivities to make it the most successful PawCasso event to date!
The evening, held at The Washington Post, featured the live art of more than 30 local artists, which alone generated over $10,000! Julie Carey, Northern Virginia Bureau Chief for NBC, emceed the event, which also included the live auction of four fantastic non-art items including trips, private catered dinners and wine tastings.

The evening ended with dancing to the music of Bad Hair Day!

We thank all of our wonderful artists, donors, volunteers and attendees! See you next year on April 26, 2014!

melissaandsadielorescrop.medium Photographer and author of the award-winning Photo Book Project photo book series ( Melissa McDaniel is returning to Wylie Wagg’s Tysons Corner location for one day only, Sunday, April 14, 2013. She’ll be photographing people’s dogs from 12pm to 5pm. The pet supply store is located at 7505 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church ,VA 22043.

The cost is a $25 donation that will be split between the store and Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. Money is made payable on the day for a 10-minute session. Photos will be uploaded to an online gallery after the event is over. At that time you may purchase prints a la carte. Print prices start at $18.75 for a 5″x7″.

Sessions must be booked in advance to ensure a spot! Please be sure to book ahead. Call 267.968.9973 or email to make your reservation.

McDaniel has traveled the U.S. for the last three years to produce the photo book projects, a series of photo books, note cards, fine art prints, calendars and more, all raising awareness about issues affecting animals in the U.S. today, especially those animals who are mistreated or misunderstood. A percentage of the proceeds is donated to animal rescue & advocacy groups.

McDaniel says “I adopted my dog Sadie, who was born deaf, from my local shelter. After learning that thousands of deaf dogs are put down and millions of homeless dogs are put down each year, I knew I had to do something to raise awareness about this so that in the future all dogs like Sadie are given a chance at life.”

HT is thrilled to announce that we raised $6,000 in just 5 hours on World Spay Day (February 26th) to match a generous $2,000 grant provided by the Frederick S. Upton Foundation to support an intensive spay/neuter campaign that will kick-off in April in Fayette County, WV.

“Fayette County is HT’s longest shelter partner and sadly, even after more than 10 years of our help and that of other rescues, their euthanasia numbers are still incredibly high. Almost weekly their shelter fills up with highly adoptable dogs, cats, puppies and kittens and so many are euthanized because we simply cannot get them out quickly enough. Many animals don’t even make it on their website because they are euthanized before they get the chance they deserve. “The answer must be an aggressive effort to spay the animals in the County and stop the flow of unwanted animals,” says Sue Bell, HT Founder and Executive Director. “We needed to match this grant with an additional $2,000 in donations from the public and we felt the best day to kick off this effort was World Spay Day! We are beyond thrilled with the generosity of our HT supporters and that we more than doubled our goal!”HT chose to do this program in Fayette County based on our long-standing partnership and in response to the overwhelming need for a lasting solution to the animal overpopulation in the county. “We are reaching out to elected state and local officials in Fayette County as well as businesses, residents and media partners to really bring attention to what we are doing in hopes it will generate an ongoing effort, ” says Bell. “True success will be that we can use this money quickly to spay a large number of animals, create a list of residents needing this service and then get out there and raise more money to keep doing it. We know our loyal supporters will make this possible. A $25 donation automatically becomes $50 through this initiative and that is enough to spay one cat. A $50 donation becomes $100 and that spays one dog. We are so grateful to the Frederick S. Upton Foundation for this wonderful opportunity. We know we can make a big difference.”

HT will partner with the Fayette County Animal Control and the New River Humane Society to launch this program. Stay tuned for details on this exciting new venture!
