Springfield United Methodist Church Helping Hands Ministry hosts 4th through 6th graders from all over Northern Virginia to participate in a two day mission event. Several of the children chose to help out at Homeward Trails Kitty City.  They thought it would be a wonderful opportunity for them to learn about serving others while using their gifts and talents.

The children learned about animal rescue, the importance of spaying/neutering pets and what they could do in their own communities to help.  They made catnip toys, cozy cat beds and beautiful note cards as well as helped assemble folders for adoptions. They enjoyed meeting all the Kitty City cats and gave them loads of love and attention (which was greatly appreciated!).  They got an extra surprise — they were able to socialize a group of puppies, too!

Homeward Trails would like to recognize the very special efforts of Darrell Reynard.  Following the success of the Do More 24 campaign, Darrell challenged Homeward Trails to take the momentum into the weekend.  Darrell was kind enough to match any donations that came in during that weekend up to $5,000.  Thanks to all of you, Darrell was able to match your assorted donations of $4,500 making a grand total of $9,000 for the animals!

Darrell has been a friend of  Homeward Trails since he adopted his best friend Jack in 2007.

Homeward Trails would like to extend a special thank you to Your Dog’s Best Friends Positive Play Care.  They hosted last Thursday’s “First Thursday” event in Del Ray.  They created a lovely “Rescue Row” for all of the rescue groups in attendance with tables, chairs, water bowls and a wonderful banner.  The owner, Paul Haire, was generous enough to make a donation to Homeward Trails of $100.

Your Dog's Best Friends

We cannot express how grateful we are for your support during the Do More 24 campaign.  Together we raised $50,000 to help homeless animals. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the 1118 donors, our Do More 24 business partners, and all our volunteers and friends who helped us get the word out.  We could not have done it without each and every one of you!

Congressman Jim Moran Introduces Resolution Opposing Gas Chamber For Shelter Pets. Contact YOUR local Representative TODAY!

Last week, Congressman Jim Moran, representing Northern Virginia and co-chair of the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus, introduced a resolution (H.Res 208) opposing the use of gas chambers to euthanize shelter animals and encouraging individual States to ban the cruel practice. Twenty states (including Virginia) have already done so.

“Death by gas is unnecessarily prolonged, terrifying and painful and it is unconscionable that this tactic is still being used in this country,” said Debbie Marson, local animal protection advocate and volunteer for Homeward Trails Animal Rescue.  “Lethal injection is more humane, more cost effective and only takes seconds.  Euthanasia, after all, means ‘good death.’  Death by gas chamber does not meet this definition.

The Resolution has already gathered support from over 400 groups including national, state, and local animal protection and rescue organizations. Homeward Trails is one of them!

HT adopters, volunteers and supporters are some of the most loyal animal advocates in the country and we need your help NOW! We are told time and time again how a few phone calls and e-mails make a real difference on issues affecting animals… PLEASE take just a few minutes and make one simple call. It’s that easy.

CONTACT YOUR LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE TODAY AND ASK THEM TO COSPONSOR THE RESOLUTION. Click HERE to find your Representative and their contact information.
