My name is Sugar. Someone really knew what they were doing when they named me Sugar as I am a very sweet three year old mixed breed dog. I'm looking for my perfect forever family.

I’m a true southern girl. Not too long ago I was in Texas but came to Virginia after Hurricane Harvey. Right now I live in an apartment in Alexandria where I meet lots of new people every day on the street, in the hallways and in the elevator. Lots of people stop my foster "dad" to say what a pretty girl I am.

I'm also sharp as can be. I know basic commands and will happily sit and give you my paw for a shake. I'm happy to do that cause I love people. And if you have a treat for me, all the better. I'm fond of long walks when I can meet lots of nice people and dogs and am told I really know my leash manners.

My apartment is really nice and I keep it that way since I am both house trained and crate trained. I am a big girl though with a lot of energy and really want a house with a yard to play in, especially one with adults and older teens.

Out of my home, I am full of energy but inside my favorite activity is snoozing on the couch and on my foster’s lap. I also like to toss my kong around and play with my rope toy. You can see me playing with it at this link: https://youtu.be/q2Uktaz8kAQ

If you take me home I promise to snooze on your lap until your legs go numb and be your companion on lots of walks.

Cooper is joyful. Why? Despite finding himself a stray, Cooper thinks life is full of wonderful things - he thinks humans are sublime, other dogs are fantastic playmates and he is really, really pleased that the world is bouquet of aromas for his nose.

Cooper would like to bring his joy to your world. This good looking 10 month old hound would like to join your home as a permanent member. He's got so much to love to share. Cooper really loves other dogs and will be happiest in a home with another dog pal. Two dog pals is even better. Cooper is a party guy. Cooper really would love a big secure yard to play in too. We thought Cooper wasn't great with cats but he's in a home now with a feline and he thinks she's just fine.

Like walks and hiking? Looking for someone to greet you jubilantly when you come home? If so, here's your boy. Want to learn more about Cooper? Please email Lois (see her email above).

    as you see fit:

Piper and Molly are a bonded pair that were surrendered to a rural open admissions animal shelter after their owner died. The two were in pretty rough shape, with badly overgrown nails, mobility constraints, and skin infections. HTAR pulled them from the shelter hoping to find a loving home here in the DC metro that was willing to take both, as a package, but we haven't yet found that home looking for both a Big and Little. We hate to break them up -- both girls are really easy members of the household and just want love and soft dog beds.

Piper is a 75-lb terrier mix who LOOOOOOVES people of all sizes. Don't let her deep baritone fool you -- she's a total lovebug. She maneuvers her head to be petted and will grumble and vocalize when you stop. She also loves to go on walks -- stairs are tough (she'd prefer single-level living) but leisurely neighborhood and beach walks are her thing. She's done very well meeting dogs at our adoption events, so could probably be integrated into a home with other mellow dogs (shhhh ... don't tell Molly). She likes to lounge on low-slung couches, if permitted, and sleeps on a dog bed on the floor next to the foster at night. On workdays the two are confined to a large airy laundry room with lots of bedding -- but given her impeccable house manners, she's probably do just fine with the run of the house. She's a low maintenance sweetheart who would fit into many types of households.

The girls are really easy members of the household and just want love and soft dog beds.

We hate to break them up -- both girls are really easy members of the household and just want love and soft dog beds.

Molly is a 15-lb chihuahua mix. She's rarely found far from Piper's side -- she seems to draw confidence from Piper's presence. She would miss Piper more than Piper missed her, were the two separated. Molly was nearly bald when surrendered to the shelter -- HTAR, her foster, and a veterinary specialist are working together to deal with deep-seated skin issues (long-term prognosis is good but she'll likely be on a limited/hypoallergenic diet for life). As her health improved, so did her attitude. She's a spunky little thing and just as eager to go on walks as Piper is! This is no princess -- she chases critters out of the foster's yard, even the cat that is BIGGER than her. She's food motivated and **dances** when she sees her dinner being prepared. She sleeps on the big bed with her fosters -- on TOP of the covers between their feet most of the night, but around 5:30a she likes to burrow UNDER the covers between them. Molly loves to give kisses and be petted, especially tummy rubs, but is a little sensitive about her ears and may not appreciate small grabby hands, so probably best with older children (she does great with the foster's 11-yr-old granddaughter). Molly has not attended too many adoption events -- the other dogs make her anxious. She's also a little slow to warm to strangers -- not atypical for some of the smaller breeds. Molly would probably do best with a Chi-experienced family who is around more than not. Like Piper, she'd prefer single-level living.
