My name is Sugar - I'm a Hurricane Harvey survivor.

Someone really knew what they were doing when they named me Sugar as I am a very sweet three year old mixed breed dog. I'm looking for my perfect forever family.

I’m a true southern girl. Not long ago I was in Texas but came to Virginia after Hurricane Harvey. Right now I live in an apartment in Alexandria where I meet lots of new people every day on the street, in the hallways and in the elevator. Lots of people stop my foster "dad" to say what a pretty girl I am.

Right now I am learning my basic commands and doing really well. I get to go on lots of long walks which is really fun. I meet lots of nice people and dogs and am told I really know my leash manners.

My apartment is really nice and I keep it that way since I am both house trained and crate trained. I am a big girl though with a lot of energy and really want a house with a yard to play in, especially one with adults and older teens.

Out of my home, I am full of energy but inside my favorite activity is snoozing on the couch and on my foster’s lap. I also like to toss my kong around and play with my rope toy. You can see me playing with it at this link: https://youtu.be/q2Uktaz8kAQ

If you take me home I promise to snooze on your lap until your legs go numb and be your companion on lots of walks.

Cooper is joyful. Why? Despite finding himself a stray, Cooper thinks life is full of wonderful things - he thinks humans are sublime, other dogs are fantastic playmates and he is really, really pleased that the world is bouquet of aromas for his nose.

Cooper would like to bring his joy to your world. This good looking 8 month old hound would like to join your home as a permanent member. He's got so much to love to share. Cooper really loves other dogs and will be happiest in a home with another dog pal. He finds cats scary so a cat free home is the right one for this lovely dog.

Like walks and hiking? Looking for someone to greet you jubilantly when you come home? If so, here's your boy. Want to learn more about Cooper? Please email Lois (see her email above).

This attractive dog was named for her pretty ticking coloring (the spots that look like pepper was sprinkled on). But the name also describes her personality. Friendly Pepper is nothing if not ebullient in the best possible way.

Pepper loves to play! She is great with other dogs and affectionate with people. She is learning to curb her enthusiasm and not jump up to greet folks. Since her enthusiasm might be a little overwhelming for a toddler, Pepper probably will do best in a home with older children. And ideally, Pepper would like a home with a canine playmate.

Pepper is one year old and just under 40 lbs. She is eager to find an active home where she'll get lots of walks.

Lorenzo is a handsome, happy one year old tricolored hound. He's a nice size at 45 lbs. Lorenzo is a playful boy who loves other dogs and is a friend to humans big and small. As he's a country boy, he is sensitive to city noises and a little shy but he's getting used to his new surroundings.

Even tho he's still getting used to new people and places, its apparent already that he's got the makings of a great snuggler.

Lorenzo probably never lived in a home before but he picked up house training really quickly and figured out stairs quickly too. He's a smart pup!

Lorenzo ignores cats, LOVES other dogs and is just the loveliest dog. He's waiting to find his new family.

Lexi is a cordial and engaging dog. She's a happy girl who likes to play with other dogs, gets along with humans young and old and even is fine with cats.

Everyone who has met her and cared for her at Homeward Trails concurs that she is one awesome dog. She is well-behaved, super loving and affectionate, knows some basic commands, and learns quickly.

After meeting Lexi, you'd never guess that, before she came to a rural shelter, she belonged to owners who kept her tied outside. Despite this sad past, Lexi is a happy, well adjusted good looking dog. In a word, she is a fantastic dog.

Onyx is an adorable little guy. He's sweet and good with other dogs and cats. Onyx, a black and tan feist mix, is living in a foster home with two cats now.

Onyx was rescued from a hoarder in Puerto Rico. Like many dogs who have had this sad start in life, Onyx hasn't had a lot of experiences - so many things are new and scary to him. Lucky for Onyx, he's in a wonderful foster home where he's learning that the world can be a wonderful place. He's getting used to new people and new sights and sounds. This little guy is awfully smart and making great progress.

Onyx is eager to find his new loving home stateside.

    as you see fit:

Piper and Molly are a bonded pair that were surrendered to a rural open admissions animal shelter after their owner died. The two were in pretty rough shape, with badly overgrown nails, mobility constraints, and skin infections. HTAR pulled them from the shelter hoping to find a loving home here in the DC metro that was willing to take both, as a package, but we haven't yet found that home looking for both a Big and Little. We hate to break them up -- both girls are really easy members of the household and just want love and soft dog beds.

Piper is a 75-lb terrier mix who LOOOOOOVES people of all sizes. Don't let her deep baritone fool you -- she's a total lovebug. She maneuvers her head to be petted and will grumble and vocalize when you stop. She also loves to go on walks -- stairs are tough (she'd prefer single-level living) but leisurely neighborhood and beach walks are her thing. She's done very well meeting dogs at our adoption events, so could probably be integrated into a home with other mellow dogs (shhhh ... don't tell Molly). She likes to lounge on low-slung couches, if permitted, and sleeps on a dog bed on the floor next to the foster at night. On workdays the two are confined to a large airy laundry room with lots of bedding -- but given her impeccable house manners, she's probably do just fine with the run of the house. She's a low maintenance sweetheart who would fit into many types of households.

The girls are really easy members of the household and just want love and soft dog beds.

Molly is a 15-lb chihuahua mix. She's rarely found far from Piper's side -- she seems to draw confidence from Piper's presence. She would miss Piper more than Piper missed her, were the two separated. Molly was nearly bald when surrendered to the shelter -- HTAR, her foster, and a veterinary specialist are working together to deal with deep-seated skin issues (long-term prognosis is good but she'll likely be on a limited/hypoallergenic diet for life). As her health improved, so did her attitude. She's a spunky little thing and just as eager to go on walks as Piper is! This is no princess -- she chases critters out of the foster's yard, even the cat that is BIGGER than her. She's food motivated and **dances** when she sees her dinner being prepared. She sleeps on the big bed with her fosters -- on TOP of the covers between their feet most of the night, but around 5:30a she likes to burrow UNDER the covers between them. Molly loves to give kisses and be petted, especially tummy rubs, but is a little sensitive about her ears and may not appreciate small grabby hands, so probably best with older children (she does great with the foster's 11-yr-old granddaughter). Molly has not attended too many adoption events -- the other dogs make her anxious. She's also a little slow to warm to strangers -- not atypical for some of the smaller breeds. Molly would probably do best with a Chi-experienced family who is around more than not. Like Piper, she'd prefer single-level living.
