Tank is an outgoing and friendly 2 year old dog who LOVES to play. He's good with other dogs and fine with cats. Tank is a gentle boy who has a ready tail wag for all his friends. He is a little timid about urban noises but this amiable country boy just needs a little time to get used to city living. Tank is much better at braving urban noises when he has a confident dog pal to show him the ropes.

Tank is looking for his special home and is looking to meet you soon.

Tank came to us from King George Animal Rescue League.

    ABOUT LAZARO:
Lazaro's story to this point has been a sad one. You can tell he has had a hard life because he has scars on his head and one back leg is short so he gets around really well on three legs.

Lazaro was rescued from a hoarding property in Puerto Rico. . He was a very, very sad sight so he became a priority to be one of the first dogs we got out of the hoarder's place (over 120 dogs on the property).

Now Lazaro's luck has changed! He has come to Virginia to look for his forever home. Lazzy, as he is called, has been living in foster care - safe and in air-conditioning! Lazzy has been getting lots of love, attention, good food and treats. Although Lazzy has been through a lot, he is still a sweet dog who gets along well with people and with other, non-aggressive dogs. He likes hugs and will happily sleep on your foot (or your bed). He seems to want to play with cats, but does not understand the difference between dog play and cat play, so he would do best in a home without cats.

Lazzy is housetrained and he is very quiet. He may bark when he meets another dog on the walking trail, but in the house he barks very, very infrequently even in response to loud noises. Lazzy sheds very little.

Lazzy walks well on a leash and will wait for you to catch up. Sometimes he gets a bit stubborn and will just stop but a few treats thrown in front of him will get him on his way (personally I think he is trying to teach his walking person to give him treats!).
Although Lazzy only has three legs, he likes to go for walks and can walk a mile and enjoy it.

Can you be the next chapter in Lazaro's life and give him a happy ending in a forever home where he is loved and well-cared-for? Please ask to meet Lazaro. He will touch your heart.

Erica is a fabulous girl! she loves cheese, hanging out on soft beds, and is great with kids and other dogs. She will need a kitty free home though as we learned she is too interested in them! She is housetrained and a generally easy to care for nice girl! She does bark when her family leaves, so perhaps a home as opposed to an apartment would be best for her. When the family was home she was as quiet as a mouse!
She LOVES people and is sweet, calm, and gentle!

Piper and Molly are a bonded pair that were surrendered to a rural open admissions animal shelter after their owner died. The two were in pretty rough shape, with badly overgrown nails, mobility constraints, and skin infections. HTAR pulled them from the shelter hoping to find a loving home here in the DC metro that was willing to take both, as a package, but we haven't yet found that home looking for both a Big and Little. We hate to break them up -- both girls are really easy members of the household and just want love and soft dog beds.

Molly is a 15-lb chihuahua mix. She's rarely found far from Piper's side -- she seems to draw confidence from Piper's presence. She would miss Piper more than Piper missed her, were the two separated. Molly was nearly bald when surrendered to the shelter -- HTAR, her foster, and a veterinary specialist are working together to deal with deep-seated skin issues (long-term prognosis is good but she'll likely be on a limited/hypoallergenic diet for life). As her health improved, so did her attitude. She's a spunky little thing and just as eager to go on walks as Piper is! This is no princess -- she chases critters out of the foster's yard, even the cat that is BIGGER than her. She's food motivated and **dances** when she sees her dinner being prepared. She sleeps on the big bed with her fosters -- on TOP of the covers between their feet most of the night, but around 5:30a she likes to burrow UNDER the covers between them. Molly loves to give kisses and be petted, especially tummy rubs, but is a little sensitive about her ears and may not appreciate small grabby hands, so probably best with older children (she does great with the foster's 11-yr-old granddaughter). Molly has not attended too many adoption events -- the other dogs make her anxious. She's also a little slow to warm to strangers -- not atypical for some of the smaller breeds. Molly would probably do best with a Chi-experienced family who is around more than not. Like Piper, she'd prefer single-level living.

    as you see fit:

Piper is a 75-lb terrier mix who LOOOOOOVES people of all sizes. Don't let her deep baritone fool you -- she's a total lovebug. She maneuvers her head to be petted and will grumble and vocalize when you stop. She also loves to go on walks -- stairs are tough (she'd prefer single-level living) but leisurely neighborhood and beach walks are her thing. She's done very well meeting dogs at our adoption events, so could probably be integrated into a home with other mellow dogs (shhhh ... don't tell Molly). She likes to lounge on low-slung couches, if permitted, and sleeps on a dog bed on the floor next to the foster at night. On workdays the two are confined to a large airy laundry room with lots of bedding -- but given her impeccable house manners, she's probably do just fine with the run of the house. She's a low maintenance sweetheart who would fit into many types of households.

The girls are really easy members of the household and just want love and soft dog beds.
