Sponsor These Shelter Animals In Time to Bring Them to Safety

The animals featured here are some of the hundreds Homeward Trails is asked to rescue each week. We have limited time to get them  safely to rescue. Space and money are the greatest barriers to us saying yes to each request. It costs approximately $150 to rescue each dog and $100 to rescue each cat. This includes basic vet care, fuel for transport, and housing once they arrive at HT.

Please note that we make every effort to rescue all animals that are fully sponsored. Rare exceptions occur if the shelter secures a home locally with short notice or an unexpected serious medical or behavioral issue arises preventing the transport of the animal. In these cases, your sponsorship funds will be applied immediately to another animal in need if the animal you sponsored is no longer available for transfer to Homeward Trails.

Your sponsorship of an animal will save a life in real time. Every donation helps save a life.

Please, consider a tax-deductible donation today to help these animals. They deserve a 2nd chance at life. And together, we can give them that.

This precious baby is Peanut. Peanut has had a very tragic life thus far. When she was a tiny puppy, she fell from a second story window. It is nothing short of a miracle that Peanut survived that fall, and without severe or permanent injury. After her terrifying incident, a local foster in Puerto Rico agreed to take her in and rehab her back to health. It is no surprise that the foster ended up falling in love with this amazingly sweet girl, but as much as she wanted to keep her, she knows that she can only continue to foster if she let’s her foster pets move on to new homes and get adopted. Adoption rates in Puerto Rico are very low and the foster wants only the best for little Peanut so she made the agonizing decision to surrender her to Homeward Trails. We are ready to help this cutie come to a local DC foster home, but her flight and vet fees have to be covered before we can make the commitment. Peanut’s future depends on us – please sponsor this adorable Peanut’s rescue!

Tita was living with two other dogs in Puerto Rico when her owner suddenly died, leaving her homeless. Her housemates have found new homes, but poor Tita hasn’t been so lucky and is still lingering in a shelter in Puerto Rico. We hate to see Tita so scared and alone, especially since we know this super sweet and loving dog will easily find a new home here. She hasn’t adjusted well to a noisy, busy shelter so we need to get her out as soon as possible. But we need to raise enough money to cover both her flight and her vetting. Can you help us bring Tita to safety?

Fred and Wilma have us shouting “Yabba-Dabba-Doo!” These adorable 10-week-old puppies were surrendered to shelter by their owner, though we can’t figure out why. These two are so sweet, and ready to love and kiss anyone who needs a good cuddle!

They are currently at a shelter in rural Virginia (probably not far from their town of Bedrock). But they sure would love to give northern Virginia a try. They may have been too much for their old owner to handle, but we have a feeling they will be exactly right for some lucky family in the Homeward Trails community!!!

This gorgeous Mama is Nova. Her and her 8 puppies have been at a shelter in South Georgia, just barely escaping the cold of the streets. The puppies are only four weeks old, and have multiple vet needs that could keep them from growing up strong and healthy. Nova has been a tough mom and sheltered her babies through the initial storm, but now she needs a break and we need to help her find a new home as well as homes for her 8 adorable puppies. These dogs have survived quite an ordeal to get this far, and now that they’re at the home stretch we just need your help to make sure they stay happy and healthy until they find their forever homes.

Lemon and Lime, are siblings, only 3 months old, and were lucky to be part of a litter found by a tourist visiting Puerto Rico. She got to them just in time as they were struggling to survive on their own. These young pups were left to contend with homelessness, illness, and no way to know when they would get their next meal or clean water. At such a young age and with no one to help them survive, it is unlikely they would have lasted much longer without being rescued. Even if they had managed to make it through the next few months we know how dangerous it is for strays who cannot feed themselves or fend off predators or abusers.

They are with a local foster now but that is only half the battle. They do not have the resources to keep them cared for or to help place the puppies. We know if we can get these sweet puppies to us we can get them the medical care they need and resources so they can thrive. It is expensive to bring dogs all the way from Puerto Rico but it is necessary to ensure they have the proper veterinarian resources and help at this essential age. We will do everything we can to get them the help they need but they need your help too. You can contribute to their escape from a dangerous situation. You can make sure they get the care they need.

These poor puppies are lucky to be alive. This litter of five was born to a feral dog who lives in a wooded area in Puerto Rico. It’s a dangerous environment for puppies — cold, unprotected and unsanitary. If they stayed there, it’s unlikely they would all survive, facing a high risk of infection or starvation. There are simply too many puppies in the area and not enough people able to help them.

We knew we had to rescue these dogs while they’re still young and open to people. We’ve been able to trap them, but they’re not home free yet. We have to raise the funds to get them to the United States, and that’s a big bill. We need to fly Stacy, Belen, Beto, Cesar and Bella here, get them proper medical care and get their vaccines taken care of so they can find loving homes in the DC area. Can you help these five sweet pups catch their flight and start new lives here?

Kenzie’s owner had a baby, and there just wasn’t room for Kenzie anymore. Kenzie wasn’t getting the attention and exercise she deserved, and was getting more anxious being cooped up in the house with the new baby. Kenzie’s owner wanted something better for her, and she surrendered her to the shelter to give her a fresh start with a new family.

Kenzie is a sweet girl (just look at that smile!) who loves other dogs. She’s still young, only 4-5 years old, and certainly does enjoy her play time! She enjoys whatever attention she can get, and desperately wants to be that special pup in someone’s life. We’re positive we can help Kenzie find that someone! We can help Kenzie find her way so she’ll never feel anything less than special ever again.

Daryl’s family just gave him away. They brought him and his brother to the shelter, and left them there. Why? We can’t be sure. They didn’t mention any particular reason for surrendering their dogs. What’s more, after surrendering their dogs, the family asked about adopting other dogs at the shelter–wondering if they might take someone else home with them instead! Like Daryl was just some used car and the lease was up. Time for a new model.

Poor Daryl is dealing with a lot. Between losing his family, and living in a scary shelter with strange sounds and new people, it’s no wonder that he can seem a bit shy! But in the right hands, with some time to adjust and lots of TLC, we know that Daryl will realize there is so much more to look forward to.

Daryl is just 3 years old. Homeward Trails would love to help him find the right family that will love and cherish him for the special pup he is the rest his days!

Mia’s sweet eyes melt your heart. It is hard to believe her previous owner just threw her out on the street like garbage. Mia was found wandering the countryside in Puerto Rico with Mel, one of her siblings and several puppies. She was infested with fleas and in terrible condition overall. A kind man was feeding the stray dogs when he could, but he realized that the care he was giving them wasn’t enough. A wonderful local Puerto Rican woman that partners with a rescue took the dogs in. They have been nursed back to health but there have been no adoption applications. Mia is patiently waiting her turn to start a new life with a new family, but it is becoming crystal clear that isn’t going to happen if she stays in Puerto Rico. Homeward Trails knows that her best bet to a new life is coming to the DC area. Flights are pricey and continuing her veterinary care is an additional expense. Without your donation, her rescue hangs in the balance. Please let Mia be a bright spot in 2021 – sponsor her today!

Mel’s before pictures are hard to look at. This sweet girl was found on the streets in Puerto Rico after being thrown out like garbage by her owner. Mel’s fur was almost completely gone and her skin was full of scabs, pink and raw. She was in a lot of discomfort and confused as to why her skin felt so awful. A good Samaritan was trying to feed her and her sister, Mia, whenever he could but it became clear that Mel needed more help. Luck was on her side for probably the first time in her 1.5 years of life and a local Puerto Rican rescue agreed to take her in. Finally Mel was safe, but still in need of a lot of TLC. The rescue worked a miracle and after Mel got some consistent care, she started to blossom! Her flea infestation was treated and her fur started to grow back. Mel went from mangy to a model! Now that Mel is healthy, she deserves to start a new life. Homeward Trails is ready to help this girl get on the right track but without getting her to the DC area, we won’t be able to do anything for her. Donate to her big trip to Homeward Trails and she will continue to bloom!

Jolly won’t be jolly too much longer if she has to stay at the small, rural shelter she’s in. She’s a wonderful pup! Good with people. Good with other dogs! But she’s getting antsy in her cement kennel. She’s still a puppy, full of energy and she needs room to run! She’s desperate for a buddy to play with her during the day and to cuddle her at night. Jolly needs a friend, fast!

Jolly isn’t even a year old–only 11 months–and she’s already been abandoned at the shelter. She was found and brought to the shelter as a stray. For whatever reason, not a single person ever came or called to look for her. She’s been alone at the shelter all this time, just waiting for a new friend to come along.

We know a few folks who would love to play and hang with Jolly! With your help, we can bring her to Homeward Trails and make sure she has the puppy-hood she deserves!

Little Howard was found as a stray in rural West Virginia. As a stray Howard needed to fend for himself and run from the cruelty of homelessness. We DO KNOW that we want to make sure he never has to suffer that fate again.

Howard is a charming 1 year old male with warm brown eyes and a sweet disposition who has already stolen the hearts of his rural shelter staff. But stuck at a rural shelter with limited options on transfer or adoption is no way for little Howard to spend his life.

With support and kindness from people like you he can have the beautiful life he deserves and the chance to bring joy to a new family. Please donate here to help give Howard a chance at love and happiness.

What’s more beautiful than a white spotted pittie mix? a pregnant one. This is Juniper. A mama that has spent her life on the streets, and she was finally found and brought to a shelter, only to find out there are several little ones inside her! Mano needs a helping hand! He’s been running with a pretty rough crowd, but he’s ready to leave that life behind.

Mano has been roaming the streets, living with a pack of feral dogs in Puerto Rico. People have shunned him, treated him as a pest. He has been ignored and overlooked. So many dogs in Puerto Rico live their lives as outcasts, running loose and fending for themselves. Finding whatever way they can to survive, doing their best to avoid the cruelty of humans.

But Mano is just 4-months-old. With luck, he has been taken in by rescuers who were determined to give him a better life. He has already started to adjust to the indoor life. He is friendly and loving, and would be a wonderful addition to someone’s home!

We can’t let Mano return to life on the streets. With your support, we can bring him here to get him setup with a family that will love and care for him for all his days.

Emma is done living life on the street! It was a hard life, filled with cruel or indifferent people. There was no one to hold her or pet her. No one to look out for her and keep her safe.

Four-month-old Emma was found roaming the streets of Puerto Rico with a pack of feral dogs. She was so young, rescuers thought they might be able to socialize her and give her a chance at a different life–a better life.

Feral dogs aren’t so uncommon in Puerto Rico. At best, dogs are an afterthought. At worst, pests to be dealt with. Dogs in Puerto Rico face a hard life. They must fend for themselves, while avoiding the harsh cruelty of humans. They are run off, poisoned, hit by cars and left to suffer on their own. The rescues that do exist are doing all they can, but there’s too much need and too little support.

Luckily for Emma, she was taken in by a rescue, and as they hoped, she has adjusted well to the indoor life! She is friendly and loving, and would make the perfect companion for someone–but not in Puerto Rico.

We don’t want to risk Emma returning to the life she had before. She is too sweet to live her life on the streets! With your help, we can bring Emma to Homeward Trails to continue her socialization and eventually find that perfect forever home.

These adorable little puppies have an unbelievable story and are lucky to be alive. Meet Bootsy, Sunny, Duke, Misty and Bo! They are 3 month old lab mixes who had the incredible luck of their tiny little howls being heard by some incredible people in Puerto Rico.

They were born underneath a car in Puerto Rico in the commercial Toro. They could have ended up like all the poor other strays in Puerto Rico who spend their days dodging traffic, scrounging for scraps of food and living without any human affection or vet care. Luckily, someone heard these puppies crying underneath a car and they decided to help save them no matter how hard that mission turned out to be. Several people had to chip in to help because they ended up having to lift the car off the ground in order to get to these puppies! Thankfully they were able to get to all of them while the car was lifted otherwise who knows what their fate would have been.

They weren’t in the best shape but with human intervention these puppies made it and have been waiting to catch a plane ride to DC and join Homeward Trails in their adventure to find new homes.

Let’s help these puppies have the happy ending they so deserve.

It broke her heart to drive away every day and leave them but she had nowhere for them to go. Thankfully, Homeward Trails saw the posting and immediately reached out to a friend and rescuer in this town who then connected us with another rescuer who took them in.
