Sponsor These Shelter Animals In Time to Bring Them to Safety

The animals featured here are some of the hundreds Homeward Trails is asked to rescue each week. We have limited time to get them  safely to rescue. Space and money are the greatest barriers to us saying yes to each request. It costs approximately $150 to rescue each dog and $100 to rescue each cat. This includes basic vet care, fuel for transport, and housing once they arrive at HT.

Please note that we make every effort to rescue all animals that are fully sponsored. Rare exceptions occur if the shelter secures a home locally with short notice or an unexpected serious medical or behavioral issue arises preventing the transport of the animal. In these cases, your sponsorship funds will be applied immediately to another animal in need if the animal you sponsored is no longer available for transfer to Homeward Trails.

Your sponsorship of an animal will save a life in real time. Every donation helps save a life.

Please, consider a tax-deductible donation today to help these animals. They deserve a 2nd chance at life. And together, we can give them that.

Flora and Felice are only months old. They were born to an overcrowded home in Puerto Rico, destined to be turned out on the streets as soon as the novelty of having puppies in the house wore off. Like a clock, counting down until they would no longer be wanted.

Flora and Felice were the last of their litter. Rescuers knew it was only a matter of time before they were turned out on the streets, like so many dogs in Puerto Rico. Left to fend for themselves, surviving on scraps and instinct. It took some convincing, but eventually, but rescuers managed to convince the family that life on the streets was no life at all, and that Flora and Felice deserved something better.

Luckily, Homeward Trails is that something better! These two adorable pups have a chance to fly to Virginia and find the loving, forever homes they deserve. They have a chance to grow up being cared for and loved, surrounded by family. They will never have to know what it is to be turned away and abandoned. They’ll never have to live in fear of cruelty or experience the pain and trauma of being hit, abused, and neglected. With our help, Flora and Felice will never have to suffer. And that is something better, indeed.

Peach and Plum are brothers that were found barely alive on the street. At only 2.5 months old, these brown and black babies were found absolutely covered in lice, bald in many places, and severely malnourished. When the rescuer picked them up, they were small enough to fit in the palm of their hand. These poor pups then had to endure a scary, loud flight from Puerto Rico to the United States. Not only does their previous travel need to be sponsored – but so does their medical, as it will be a long road to recovery. Can you help cover their completed travel and provide these sweet, sick siblings with the care they need?

This beautiful hound with big brown eyes was found wandering the streets of southern Virginia. Leonard was lost without food or clean water and seeking shelter from the cold winds. Without his rescuers, Leonard would still be struggling to survive on his own, risking the elements, starvation, or getting hit by a car. He clearly had not been around kindness or compassion and is learning how to trust.

He was not used to people or even recognized a leash but with the hard work of his rescuers he has learned to love his walks. Leonard has been alone for his first two years of life and he deserves to know he won’t be alone again. We know his best shot at a forever home is to bring him to Homeward Trails where he can continue to thrive and be placed with a loving person to care for him. Please help Leonard and donate today.

Six cute-as-a-button 6-week-old puppies (Charlie, Bowie, Rita, Faye, Julie, Tiny) barely weighing in at 2 pounds were found covered in fleas, filled with intestinal worms, and struggling to survive in Guánica, PR after their pregnant mother was discarded like trash by her previous owner. Kind-hearted residents living nearby fed her, but even with their help, she developed mastitis and could not feed her litter, so the residents took her to a local animal clinic. The mom was given antibiotics, but the babies still need bottle fed and introduced to solid food. The local clinic does not have the resources – medicine, food, or staff – to care for such young pups, which leaves them at high risk. Transport from Puerto Rico to the States is extremely expensive, and bringing them to our shelter is the only way they will get out of harm’s way. Can you help sponsor the desperately-needed transport and care of these six sick puppies?

Lonzo is a bundle of cuteness! Believe it or not, this little 3 month old maltese mix was a stray in Puerto Rico. Lonzo’s mom was owned by a local woman who kept her outside where she had to sleep and give birth on the hard dirt floor. After Lonzo was born, because the owner did not care about the dogs, she let them loose to roam the neighborhood together. Mama dog did the best she could to keep her tiny puppy safe, but street life can be very cruel. The chances of getting hit by a car or attacked by an animal or person is extremely high. Mama and Lonzo finally got lucky though. The owner decided that in order to keep both dogs safe, the she would give up Lonzo to a local foster and rehome the mom to one of her neighbors. We can only hope the new owner will spay the sweet momma before she ends up with another litter. As for Lonzo – well this little guy is ready to put the past him! All that is standing between Lonzo and Homeward Trails is an unfortunately pricey plane ticket and necessary vet care. Please help Lonzo reach the final chapter in his stray dog tale and donate to his new chapter today!

Ginger needs our help. This 8-month-old Chi mix was spotted living around a park in the Rio Grande Valley area of Texas. Luckily, a dog lover noticed her and was able to take Ginger to a friend’s house, where she is temporarily safe and well fed. But this puppy needs a forever home, and the shelters in the area are overcrowded. The kill rate for these shelters can be as high as 98%, and the rescues can’t keep up. We know we can find Ginger a loving home — but first we have to get her here. Can you help us raise the funds to get Ginger a ride to Northern Virginia?

This litter of pups has had a rough time. As tiny pups they were found abandoned in a cardboard box, left alone to die in Puerto Rico. They were covered in mites, fleas and ticks and dangerously underweight. We do not know how long they waited there — hungry, thirsty and living in their own excrement. How long did they live IN A BOX that could have turned into their coffin?? These are questions we will never be able to answer, but we CAN ensure they never endure such torture again.

These pups deserve so much better than the life they were given and we are READY to do everything we can to provide that to them. But the flights from Puerto Rico are costly and difficult to arrange. We NEED your help to cover the costs of their flight and vetting so we can get these pups on a flight NOW so these pups can begin to leave their terrible past behind them.

Help! These tiny pups were dropped off at a rural Georgia shelter at just 6 weeks old. Because their parents were unaltered, these pups were an unwanted and unplanned litter and were given up as soon as they could be removed from their mother. These pups are not only extremely scared, they are now at great risk of disease and illness while stuck at the shelter. The shelter has no foster network and extremely limited options on transfer partners. They are desperate to help these pups anyway they can but transport from Georgia is no easy task.

This poor litter has no control over their circumstances but WE DO. After spending a week terrified in their concrete kennel, these pups FINALLY have a chance to get these puppies on a transport and into foster homes but we need YOUR help to get them here. Please help us give these puppies a second chance!

Sugar and Spice are everything nice! These 6 month old girls were dumped at the shelter by their owner. They were a result of a irresponsible breeder whose female had puppies and then they couldn’t find homes for them. The owner decided he didn’t want to be bothered by them anymore. Sugar and Spice deserve to be with a family that loves them and wants them! They are lucky enough to have each other at the shelter, but as time goes by, they wonder if they will soon be separated and living alone in cold cement runs. Rescuing one puppy is a task itself but getting these two to Homeward Trails is a little more of a challenge. Neither have had vet care and we have to get transportation that they both can get a ride on to the DC area. These sweet sisters deserve a loving home and we need your sponsorship and donations to get them to it!

Mino isn’t sure what went wrong. He was living with his family in West Virginia — and figured he’d live with them the rest of his days. But, for no apparent reason, his owners thought otherwise and surrendered him to a shelter. We see so much love left to give in this beautiful, four-year-old guy. He’s a sweet dog who will do great in a loving home. All that’s left to do is bust him out of the shelter and bring him to Northern Virginia. Can you help us raise the funds to get him here?

These 4 cats were living in horrible conditions, no clean water, no fresh food, few litter boxes and those were overflowing. They were living with almost 20 cats in a home. And most had never been to the vet or hadn’t been in years.

They made it out alive, but the conditions took a toll on their bodies. We aren’t sure how old they are, but all of them have dental disease and had not been spayed and neutered. When the rescuers showed up, they all had upper respiratory infections. But despite all of this, they were happy to get help.

Fizzy, Patches, Tuck, and Winny deserve more. They deserve our help and we want to give it to them. But this kind of rescue effort comes at a steep price. While their previous humans and their bodies may have failed them, we won’t. Please help get them fixed up and bring them to Homeward Trails.

Zeus is only a year and has had a rough start in life. He was found on the streets and southern Virginia. Scrounging for whatever food he could has left him clearly underweight. Being homeless would have left him vulnerable to starvation, disease, and attacks from wild animals and cruel people. It is lucky his rescuers were able to find him when they did or he would still be out in the storm and there is a good chance he would not have survived the cold.

Homelessness could have broken Zeus’s spirit, but despite his struggles he is really sweet and great with people and other dogs. He loves pets and snuggles and just needs the right family he can depend on. We know that Zeus would thrive in the right home and we can make sure he gets there. His current shelter does not have the resources to get him ready for adoption but we know with your help we can get him healthy and adopted. Please help Zeus find a family. Donate today.

Just look at these fluffy babies. Nutmeg and Ginger and Ella are a whopping 7 weeks old. Aside from being the cutest balls of fluff you’ve ever seen, they’re also in deep need of our help! These puppies have been roaming the West Virginia wilderness with their Mom. Nutmeg and Ginger were trapped first and taken to a foster home and luckily, Ella was just caught late on Tuesday. Mom is still on her own while the shelter continues to work to catch her!

These pups ended up at a rural shelter in WV – but the shelter is already FULL of strays and owner surrenders and is struggling to keep up with the constant animal intakes.

Nutmeg, Ginger and Ella have nowhere to go to feel safe while finding their forever home. Luckily at Homeward Trails we can take them in and give them their best chance at happy ever afters – these sweet girls are waiting.

This precious baby is Peanut. Peanut has had a very tragic life thus far. When she was a tiny puppy, she fell from a second story window. It is nothing short of a miracle that Peanut survived that fall, and without severe or permanent injury. After her terrifying incident, a local foster in Puerto Rico agreed to take her in and rehab her back to health. It is no surprise that the foster ended up falling in love with this amazingly sweet girl, but as much as she wanted to keep her, she knows that she can only continue to foster if she let’s her foster pets move on to new homes and get adopted. Adoption rates in Puerto Rico are very low and the foster wants only the best for little Peanut so she made the agonizing decision to surrender her to Homeward Trails. We are ready to help this cutie come to a local DC foster home, but her flight and vet fees have to be covered before we can make the commitment. Peanut’s future depends on us – please sponsor this adorable Peanut’s rescue!

Tita was living with two other dogs in Puerto Rico when her owner suddenly died, leaving her homeless. Her housemates have found new homes, but poor Tita hasn’t been so lucky and is still lingering in a shelter in Puerto Rico. We hate to see Tita so scared and alone, especially since we know this super sweet and loving dog will easily find a new home here. She hasn’t adjusted well to a noisy, busy shelter so we need to get her out as soon as possible. But we need to raise enough money to cover both her flight and her vetting. Can you help us bring Tita to safety?

Fred and Wilma have us shouting “Yabba-Dabba-Doo!” These adorable 10-week-old puppies were surrendered to shelter by their owner, though we can’t figure out why. These two are so sweet, and ready to love and kiss anyone who needs a good cuddle!

They are currently at a shelter in rural Virginia (probably not far from their town of Bedrock). But they sure would love to give northern Virginia a try. They may have been too much for their old owner to handle, but we have a feeling they will be exactly right for some lucky family in the Homeward Trails community!!!

This gorgeous Mama is Nova. Her and her 8 puppies have been at a shelter in South Georgia, just barely escaping the cold of the streets. The puppies are only four weeks old, and have multiple vet needs that could keep them from growing up strong and healthy. Nova has been a tough mom and sheltered her babies through the initial storm, but now she needs a break and we need to help her find a new home as well as homes for her 8 adorable puppies. These dogs have survived quite an ordeal to get this far, and now that they’re at the home stretch we just need your help to make sure they stay happy and healthy until they find their forever homes.

Lemon and Lime, are siblings, only 3 months old, and were lucky to be part of a litter found by a tourist visiting Puerto Rico. She got to them just in time as they were struggling to survive on their own. These young pups were left to contend with homelessness, illness, and no way to know when they would get their next meal or clean water. At such a young age and with no one to help them survive, it is unlikely they would have lasted much longer without being rescued. Even if they had managed to make it through the next few months we know how dangerous it is for strays who cannot feed themselves or fend off predators or abusers.

They are with a local foster now but that is only half the battle. They do not have the resources to keep them cared for or to help place the puppies. We know if we can get these sweet puppies to us we can get them the medical care they need and resources so they can thrive. It is expensive to bring dogs all the way from Puerto Rico but it is necessary to ensure they have the proper veterinarian resources and help at this essential age. We will do everything we can to get them the help they need but they need your help too. You can contribute to their escape from a dangerous situation. You can make sure they get the care they need.

Daryl’s family just gave him away. They brought him and his brother to the shelter, and left them there. Why? We can’t be sure. They didn’t mention any particular reason for surrendering their dogs. What’s more, after surrendering their dogs, the family asked about adopting other dogs at the shelter–wondering if they might take someone else home with them instead! Like Daryl was just some used car and the lease was up. Time for a new model.

Poor Daryl is dealing with a lot. Between losing his family, and living in a scary shelter with strange sounds and new people, it’s no wonder that he can seem a bit shy! But in the right hands, with some time to adjust and lots of TLC, we know that Daryl will realize there is so much more to look forward to.

Daryl is just 3 years old. Homeward Trails would love to help him find the right family that will love and cherish him for the special pup he is the rest his days!

Few things are as heartbreaking as abandoned puppies. These little 6 week old puppies were dumped at a rural shelter. Their names are Artemis, Aphrodite, Hera, Athena, Demeter and Apollo. They’ve been alive on this earth for a short time, and already they’ve had to endure the fear and loneliness of abandonment. These little cuties want nothing but to give love and be loved, and it’s up to us to make sure that happens for them. We want to get them to homeward tails as soon as possible so we can begin to find them the perfect homes, and they never have to spend a night on a cold concrete floor again.
