A Salute to Mikey – 2nd Dog Ever Rescued by Homeward Trails

Mikey, formerly Black Dog, with his family

It is with a heavy heart that we pay our respects and gratitude to Mikey, one of the first three Homeward Trails dog ever rescued. Mikey died on February 23 at the age of almost 14 years.

Mikey (formerly known as Black Dog) made the maiden voyage from Fayette County, WV with HT Founder Sue Bell on January 1st, 2001, along with Brown Dog and Lucy. Mikey did not know that he would be the inspiration for the creation of Homeward Trails, which would go on to rescue more than 15,000 homeless cats and dogs in its first 10 years of operation.

Mikey spent his life here in the DC area with mom Julia, dad Mike, and human sister Margaret.

Thank you Mikey for being such an inspiration. And thank you to Julia for taking Mikey in and giving him the life he (and all other dogs) deserve.

We will miss you Mikey!
